The Cinerama Dome turned 50 in 2013 and ArcLight asked to create a celebration. We started by designing two museum displays. The first featured a three dimensional effect with a window cling of workers moving a hexagon to be placed on the Dome. It can be seen being built in the background of the display.  Behind the doors sits a reader rail telling the history of the building.  The right side shows a montage of images from the “Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” press junket (which took place at the groundbreaking of the Dome) and an image of the marquee on the Dome after it opened. We even found and refurbished the original Welton Becket model, which sits on the left side. The second display features the history of the marketing used on the Dome. In the main building we created a display that listed every movie that played in the Cinerama Dome, which was the picture you clicked on to come to this window.

We also created a new 50 year anniversary logo that played in front of all the movies that summer. And throughout the building we placed quotes from fans who saw movies in the Dome throughout it’s history.

We curated a week of events that started with the mayor of Los Angeles presenting ArcLight a certificate for the 50th Anniversary of the Cinerama Dome. This was followed by a screening of the first movie that played there - It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World - along with the Q&A withe remaining living cast, hosted by Jeff Carlin. We even had four of the body casts used in the film. An additional six screenings of movies that played in the Dome over the years ran throughout the week, with Q&A’s featuring major talent (American Beauty, Galaxy Quest, Logan’s Run and others) that ended with Steven Spielberg and a screening of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.
